About the Academy

Purpose

The purpose is not to train new police officers but instead to familiarize the public with how the Police Department works within its policies and procedures. Classes will be led by a variety of officers to allow for different opinions as to how to perform an officer’s duties.

We as a department realize that we could not perform efficiently without the help and cooperation of the public. This Academy will facilitate a healthier and mutually beneficial relationship for a more effective police force to better serve you.

Misconceptions of police work are another concern of ours. Through the Academy we hope to clear up any misconceptions the public may have of police work and do away with some of the negative connotations of police officers. We are all a part of this community and it is best for all to have a strong working relationship with each other.

Some elements of the course will involve hands-on role-playing. Participants will partake in mock vehicle stops, arrests, investigations, court appearances, and use of force demonstrations.

Here is what previous graduates had to say about the course:

“I think what you taught was great.  A lot of the citizens don’t realize how much is involved with being a police officer.”

“It helps to actually see what you guys (and gals) do.”

“I was very pleased (and overwhelmed at times) at the education & training our police force has.  Found all officers helpful with great personalities.”

“I’d recommend they get involved. It’s more exciting that way.”
