The Bike Patrol was proposed by
Officer Tom Adams. Officer Adams and Sergeant Scott Casey spent several months researching
and then setting up the patrol. This has been one of the Department's best received
community oriented programs. Old Town has many miles of bicycle trails that connect to the
University of Maine Campus. The Bike Patrol is the perfect tool to patrol and maintain
safety on the trails. The down town business community has received the patrol with
enthusiasm, and is very positive about the personal contacts the officers are able to make
when on the bikes.
The patrol also makes many positive
contacts with young people in the downtown area in the evening hours. These contacts have
had a positive impact on law enforcement incidents in the area. They also assist in
parking enforcement, business checks, and regular patrol activities. Officers on bicycles
can cover an amazing amount of territory in a short period of time and have even done
traffic stops. |
